Winter Beauty Care
Your clothes, mood and everything changes with the season so should your skin care. In winter, your skin gets dry due to cold temperature and indoor heat. Dry skin is uncomfortable, itchy and flaky. For some people, their skin gets extremely dry and inflammation occurs which might be a sign of eczema. Therefore, it is very important to keep your skin hydrated.
Moisturize
Lotions and creams that you use in summer might not work for your winter skin. Find hydrating and oil-based moisturizers instead of water-based ones. The oil is important to retain moisture in the layers of your skin.
If you have oily/combination skin type, choose non-clogging moisturizers as they won’t clog your pores. Body moisturizing creams or lotions that you use for your body might not be safe to use on your face because it can breakout your skin.
Make sure to moisturize throughout the day. After shower or when you rinse your face and hands while your skin is still wet, don’t forget to use lotion. In winter, keep a small bottle of lotion in your purse so that you moisturize your skin throughout the day. Use an extra rich moisturizer before going to bed. It helps to lock in moisture.
Haircare
Avoid washing your hair every day to prevent dandruff and breakage. Even if your hair is problem free rest of the year, some issues are common in everyone during winter. Dry scalp and lifeless hair is a sign that your hair needs moisture.
Massage your scalp with olive oil or coconut oil for a few minutes. Cover your hair in a shower cap and shampoo after 30-45 minutes. Rinse and use a deep conditioner.
Try to minimize the use of blow dryer, curling and straightening iron during winter. Before using hot tools on your hair, apply a heat protecting serum.
Use a leave-in conditioner to protect your hair from getting dry by windy weather.
Wear Sunscreen
Just like in summertime, it’s important to wear sunscreen in winter as well. Wind sucks up moisture from your skin and the sun is too harsh at higher altitudes. We often forget to put on sunscreen which results in flaky and dull skin at the end of the day. Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF (sun protection factor) 20. Higher SPF means more protection from harmful sun rays. Also, look for sunscreens which contain cocoa/shea butter, aloe and moisturizing oils for your winter skin.
Use lukewarm water, not hot
We all want hot water for shower and baths but it’s not good for the skin. Hot water draws moisture from the skin and causes itchiness. Be kind to your skin and say no to hot water, instead use lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh soaps and cleansers as they can irritate your skin. Use soaps containing natural ingredients and oils. You can also use shower gel or cream which doesn’t dry out your body. Limit exfoliation to once a week. Exfoliation is important to get rid of all the dead skin that accumulates on your body. Don’t forget to moisturize your body after a shower.
Lip care for a soft pout
Chapped lips are uncomfortable and flaky. Use a lip balm with vitamin E and keep reapplying it throughout the day. To shed the flakes from your lips, apply lip balm at night as well so that your lips don’t appear like your lips are peeling.
Foot Care
Your heels are the driest part of your body. Having dry feet can result in cracks which are painful and ugly. Every night, soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes and pat dry. Apply vaseline or any rich body butter and wear socks. Wash your feet in the morning. If you don’t have time to do this every day, do it twice a week.
