The Best Skin Care Routine

With so many products to choose from, it’s easy to find a suitable skin care routine for your skin. Before you start selecting products for your skin, you should know your skin type. Choosing products according to your skin type prevents any irritation or side effects.

There are always new amazing products coming in the market and at times we’re unsure whether our skin will like it or not. It best to try sample size products before actually buying a full-size product. Use the product for a period of time to see how it works.

You should use products for a duration to see results. Remember that products don’t work overnight. Your skin renews itself every 28 days. The bottom skin cells take 28 days to come to the surface. That’s why using products for some time allows your old and new skin to adjust to the new product. This process of skin renewing is faster in teenagers and kids. It slows down as we age.

There are some products that speed up this process to keep the surface of your skin clean. It brings the clogged pores and the impurities to the surface which actually make your skin look worse for a few days. These are the products which make your skin look worse before it gets better. Therefore you should allow the product to adjust and see if the product is actually working or giving you breakouts.

Basically, there are four simple steps in any skincare routine.


We all wash our face at least once a day but it is recommended to wash twice a day. You want to use products formulated for your skin type. Using a cleanser for oily skin on dry skin will deprive your skin of oil and moisture that it requires. The product shouldn’t leave your skin squeaky clean as some oil is necessary for your skin.

If you have problem free skin then opt for a gentle cleanser. For sensitive skin, avoid using a washcloth or any device such as Clarisonic every day. You can use it on alternate days or depend on how it works for your skin.

If you wear makeup, first remove your make up with makeup removing face wipes. It is the easiest method to remove makeup when you are too tired to wash your face. However, wipes alone aren’t enough. You have to wash your face with water and a face wash after wiping off your make up. Also, there are some deep skin cleansers which are ideal to use once or twice a week.


You don’t have to necessarily exfoliate your face daily. Use a gentle face scrub. This step is important to remove dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of your skin. If you have oily acne prone skin then avoid using harsh exfoliators as they can aggravate your acne. Exfoliating products have little beads in them. If they feel like sandpaper on your skin then stop using such products. Opt for a microbeads scrub as they are gentle on your skin. You can exfoliate once or twice a week.


Toner is used to balance the natural pH levels of your skin which is affected in the process of cleansing. By toning, your skin becomes resistant against bacteria. There are many different types of toners available. Some simply restore the pH level of your skin others are used to fight bacteria, control oil or prevent blemishes. Choose one according to your skin type. Simply, dab some on a cotton pad and apply all over your face and neck.


After cleansing and toning, you should moisturize your skin. Some people think that they don’t need a moisturizer because they have oily skin, this step cannot be avoided even if you have oily skin. You can choose from gels (best for oily/spot prone skin), creams (best for dry/sensitive skin) and serums (best for normal/oily skin). If you don’t moisturize your skin, your skin is most likely to get premature wrinkles. Therefore this step is extremely important for dry skin.

These are some of the basic steps of good skin care routine. Other than these steps, you should apply a mask weekly or twice monthly and use treatments for skin problems. Stick to a few products and do not change them immediately if instant results aren’t seen.
