5 Ways to Correct Uneven Skin Tone
Uneven skin tone is caused by UV exposure, hormonal changes or scars from acne and pimples. The first thing to do is identify what’s causing your uneven skin tone and then treat it accordingly.
Here are five ways to correct skin tone:
Don’t Skip Sunscreen
It’s better to protect your skin than treating it afterward. Applying sunscreen on your skin before leaving the house is essential. Whether you wear makeup or not, invest in a good sunscreen with at least SPF 30 like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen Lotion with Broad Spectrum SPF 100+. It protects your skin from harmful UV rays that increase melanin production thus causing hyperpigmentation and melasma. A sunscreen also prevents fine lines and wrinkles.
Use a Skin Lightening Treatment
Dark spots and hyperpigmentation can be treated with a bleaching cream. Hydroquinone(Alpha Skin Care – Dual Action Skin Lightener, 2% Hydroquinone) is a common bleaching agent used for treating melasma. It’s a chemical exfoliator and also works to stops melanin production. However, this should be used after consulting a dermatologist.
Lemon juice is also a natural bleaching ingredient. It’s rich in absorbs acid, also known as vitamin c which helps with blemishes, acne scars, and dark patches. Simply apply lemon juice on your skin every night and rinse it off in the morning. You can dilute it with some aloe vera gel for added benefit and a soothing effect. Do not go out in the sun after applying lemon juice as it can burn your skin.
Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliating with a scrub removes debris and dead skin cells and clear your pores. Use a scrub suited for your skin types. You can also invest in an electronic facial brush like Clarisonic or Vanity Planet that claims to purge your pores with minimum effort. Simply, apply your cleanser on the brush, turn it on and use it on your face.
DIY Turmeric Mask
Turmeric is an ancient natural remedy used for skin brightening and lightening. It contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric has curcumin which helps with pigmentation. Mix turmeric powder with lemon juice or milk and apply it on your skin. Wait for 10-15 minutes then wash it off with lukewarm water.
You can also make a paste with turmeric by mixing it with milk and flour. Take quarter tsp turmeric powder, 1 tbsp of wheat or gram flour and enough milk to make a thick paste. Apply it on your face and hands and gently massage for five minutes. Rinse it off with warm water. You’ll notice an instant glow in your complexion. Do this once or twice a week.
Try Peeling Products
If regular scrubs are not helping with sun damage, discoloration, and wrinkles, try at home peels that contain glycol acid or alpha hydroxy acid(AHA). These are more affordable than getting a chemical peel done with an aesthetician.
A more natural and mild alternative of chemical peel is an enzyme peel. Its considered natural because it’s derived from fruits. Some people with sensitive skin find skin peels too harsh so enzymes peels are perfect for them. Enzyme peel works by removing dead skin cells and refining pores.
